(2005-2007) Beckwith Drain Realignment

(2005-2007) Beckwith Drain Realignment

In 2005, Collonade Developments initiated the requirement for a channel relocation of the Beckwith Drain, in Carleton Place, Ontario, in order to construct a RONA home improvement store on the property. A small channel was located on the property, which was mainly wetland containing many warm water sport and bait fish. However, once drained to accommodate the structure and associated parking lot, a larger channel would be required to convey base flow and storm water.

From the beginning of the channel design process, EcoTec worked closely with the developer and engineering firm to construct a channel that was stable, and satisfied both the environmental agency and the proponent requirements. The result was a 340 m long meandering channel on the RONA property. A marsh channel was also designed and constructed downstream of the RONA property. This channel was 645 m long, and was constructed in the wetland peat.

Construction of the channel began in July 2006 and was completed in December 2006. Fish habitat components used included pools, weirs, sweeper logs, and fashines. EcoTec constructed the channel as well as installed the riparian features.
